Online Clearance and Bargains Everyday
Amazon.com (1995) is the pioneer online retailing store. It strives to be the online store where you can buy anything that you want. It gets its products through third-party agreements and tie-ups with companies like Toys ‘R’ Us and Target.
What makes Amazon different from other online stores is that they have two price options: pricing for brand new products and for used products. It also indicates how many products are available for both brand new and used categories. Used products are posted by Amazon account holders. They post their product with the asking price plus shipping cost. Brand new products are displayed from a certain starting price. You get to choose the best price and merchant for the same product. All merchants are displayed under the same product category. Amazon.com presents the best price for any product available in multiple stores.
BarnesandNoble.com (1997) is the largest book retailer in the United States. Just like other online retailers, BN.com has evolved into selling electronics, movies, toys, and other items.
If you’re going to use the search bar for things on sale, bargain, or clearance, this will not work because some books have these words on their titles. The best thing to do is to navigate the pages and click on the different categories to find out bargains or discounts. This usually appears under the Customer Favorites on the left sidebar of the site.
eBay.com (1995) started as a marketplace for goods and services of individuals. According to The history of eBay (2001), this has evolved into a successful “online person-to-person trading community on the Internet, using the World Wide Web.”
eBay has a Deals & Gifts category. There are four sub-categories: Daily Deals, Deal Finder, Gift Cards, and Group Gifts. The Daily Deals are the deals available only for the day, which includes shipping. Under this, it features Today’s Top Deals. Once one of the top deals runs out, they will replace it with a new deal. The Deal Finder compares prices from other merchants with that from eBay. According to the “learn more” part of the page, Deal Finder was built to “compare the current selling price of an item on eBay to the lowest price we can find for the same item on (different retailers).”
Newegg.com (2001) is an online retail store of computer hardware and software. Like other online retailers, it too, has a clearance section under the Outlet category on the tabs bar. Clearance items are also categorized like cellphones, cameras, and other types of electronics. This includes recertified items (or items that have never been used, but had a broken seal etc.) and open box items (or items returned by customers, which may have incomplete documents and has a limited warranty) sold at a discounted price.
Walmart.com has a feature called Value of the Day. This showcases products that are on a special discount only available in one day. It could be anywhere from electronics to outdoor furniture or girls’ uniforms. As long as Wal-mart has a special price for a special product, it will appear under this feature.
Also from Walmart.com is the Clearance button which showcases the products that are on sale depending on the season. Once entered, featured categories on clearance will appear. They are also categorized as store or online items. These show which items are available online or in the store using the store’s zip code (the “Show Store Items” feature is still in its beta phase as of publication).
Zappos.com (1999) was created by Nick Swinmurn simply because he couldn’t find a pair of shoes. He spent an hour going around the mall looking for shoes, but wasn’t very successful. He decided to quit his day-job and built Zappos as the online store for shoes. Now, the online store carries not just shoes, but also clothing, accessories, baby stuff, even sporting goods! It recently had to go to a company restructuring due to the company’s expansion.
With many products available online, there are certain products bound to be on sale any time of the day. Just go to their website at Zappos.com and type the words “on sale” on the search bar to get a list of all items. You can also just go to the home page to see what’s on sale or special, also depending on the season.
